Q&A

How do I get started?

Just turn up at your local detachment on a parade night. You don't need to call in advance, but you can if you'd like to. You'll join in with the training straight away, which will give you a chance to find out whether it's something you enjoy.

Can anyone join?

Yes! As long as you're aged 12-18 and in Year 8 or above at school, there are no other requirements. If you're over 18, you can get involved as an adult instructor. Don't worry if you're not physically fit or you don't have much confidence - we'll give you all the support you need to develop.

How much does it cost?

There's no cost when you first come along to visit a detachment. If you decide to enrol after a few weeks, you pay a one-off £10 which covers all your activity insurance. You also need to buy a pair of boots (approx £25), but the rest of your uniform is loaned to you for free. There is no weekly fee unless specified on the detachment page.

The cost of camps and courses is heavily subsidised by the MOD, and some are free to attend. Most residential and field weekends cost under £10, and cadets can attend a two-week Annual Camp for just £60. Overseas trips may be more expensive.

Can cadets get called up by HM Armed Forces?

Absolutely not. We're sponsored by, but not part of, the Army. That means we use similar equipment and weapons to them, but cadets can't get called up and there's no obligation to join the Armed Forces at any time. What we do is just for fun, and a great way of developing confidence, leadership and teamwork.
