Remembrance Sunday 2009
Alan Hames,
10 November 2009
At 11:00 on Sunday 8 November 2009, in towns and villages throughout Oxfordshire, silence fell as people remembered those who had given their lives in defence of their country for the past 95 years. Wherever there was a cadet detachment, cadets took part in local ceremonies of remembrance.
At St Giles in Oxford, the Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff, the Lord Mayor, the Burgermeister of Bonn, civilian services and military representatives, including our Commandant, Colonel Wenlock, laid wreaths.
This was followed by a March Past of military units and youth groups, led by our Bugles and Drums and Quebec Company.
The Salvation Army Band led the ex-servicemen and women, who were given a special welcome by the very large crowd of onlookers who had attended the service and parade.
At the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Botley, military representatives of the UK Armed Forces, along with military attachés from many of the embassies whose troops had fought in the Second World War, including France, New Zealand and Germany laid wreaths. The Oxfordshire Army Cadet wreath was laid by Cdts. Gregory and Edwards-Brown of Oxpens Detachment.
