Eynsham Detachment, Oxfordshire (The Rifles) Army Cadet Force, celebrated its 40th Anniversary on Monday 19th July 2010. Battalion and Somme Company staff, cadets and detachment adult instructors, both past and present, joined Mr John Whitlock - a founder of the detachment in 1970 - for a celebration and opportunity to catch up with old friends and remember old times.
The detachment held a competition amongst the cadets to design a badge to celebrate the 40th Anniversary. The winning design was a mix of several entries and has been made into badges for the cadets to wear on their uniform.
Mr Whitlock gave the cadets and instructors a brief history of the detachment, which brought a few surprises. Eynsham Detachment, which was originally badged Royal Green Jackets, was originally part of Quebec Company. The detachment was formed in the Kings Arms in Summertown by Mr Whitlock and John Hicks, the first Detachment Commander. The Army Cadet Force was not the first cadet force in Eynsham and was preceded by an Air Training Corps Detachment in the 1950s. The detachment had good numbers in the 1970s and always paraded around 30 cadets. The uniforms were much different and made from a very itchy material, unlike today's cotton uniforms which the cadets wear.
After sampling some anniversary cake the guests were able to remember old times while looking through the detachment photo album.
Eynsham Detachment meets every Monday evening at Eynsham Village Hall, Back Lane, Eynsham.
